Description

  • Antwerp School, 16th century
  • The wing of an altarpiece: The arrest of Christ
  • oil on oak panel

Provenance

With Caretto, Milan;
Acquired from the above by the present owner in the 1980s.

Condition

The panel is uncradled and flat, with five butterfly batons joining two horizontal planks (which perhaps previously split). The paint surface is slightly dirty and the varnish slightly discoloured. A vertical line of slightly discoloured retouching runs the length of the panel along the aforementioned join. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals spot retouching throughout, notably in the sky, rocks, and scattered through the costumes of the figures, notably around the round helmet of the soldier, centre right, and in the figure at the bottom. In overall good condition.
