Condition

The panel has an old cradle and appears flat and stable. The paint surface is covered with a thick layer of discoloured varnish, which impedes assessment of the condition, but overall the painting appears to be very well-preserved. There does not seem to be an obvious reason for the cradling, but there is a small 5 cm. horizontal hairline crack running from the upper left margin. Some of the darker areas of the painting are now a little thin, and there has been a certain amount of old sensitive retouching to wear across the wood grain. This is most notable in and around the door on the left, in the background above the figures, in the legs of the man playing the fiddle and in the skirt of the seated woman next to him, as well as in the coat of the standing man with his back turned, on the left of the main group, and in the body of the man holding a tankard. Some newer retouchings are evident under ultraviolet light, but the older campaign is not visible. Offered with a later carved and gilt wood frame.
