Catalogue Note
Daniël Jansz. Thivaert was a follower of Rembrandt, whose work has often been confused with that of Jacob Willemsz. de Wet the Elder. Dr. Werner Sumowski disentangled Thivaert's oeuvre and brought to light more than a dozen works by the artist, which range from small history paintings in the manner of Jacob de Wet and Willem de Poorter, to monumental figural compositions, such as The Laborer of Gibea Offering Hospitality to the Levite and His Wife, which is also signed.1
