Description
- Carlo Ceresa
- The Angel appearing to Hagar and Ishmael
- oil on canvas, unlined; unframed
Condition
The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured but even. There are a number of small losses to the paint surface: in the upper margin, right; in the sky, upper centre; in the angel's robe, centre left; and scattered along the left and lower margins (visible in the catalogue illustration). There is also a small right-angled dent in the canvas, upper left, caused by the stretcher. There are scattered discoloured retouchings in the flesh tones of the figures, including the child, and a small restoration in the angel's hair and in the lower right corner. These are more visible with the naked eye than with ultraviolet light, which reveals a milky varnish beneath which it is difficult to discern any further intervention. In overall fair condition.
