The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar Ltd who are external specialists and not employees of Sotheby's: Structural Condition The canvas has been lined and is securely attached to a keyed wooden stretcher with staples on the turnover edges. The stretcher bar keys are missing. This is providing a secure and stable structural support. Paint Surface The paint surface has a relatively uneven and rather glossy varnish layer. There is a distinct pattern of craquelure running throughout the composition, this appears to be secure. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows extensive retouchings throughout the composition, including areas on the faces and costumes of the figures, in the background, table and foreground. Some of these retouchings consist of fine lines infilling craquelure and there are large areas which appear to cover old losses. The small lines infilling the craquelure have been carefully applied but it should be noted that the retouchings are extensive. There are also retouchings around the framing edges and other scattered retouchings. Summary The painting would therefore appear to be in relatively fair and stable condition having undergone significant restoration in the past.
