Condition
The canvas has a sensitive old relining. The surface is covered in an old and uneven varnish. There is a horizontal canvas seam or fold a quarter of the way down from the top - if if it is an addition then it's very old; the craquelure is the same across the seam, but the tonality of the paint seems different.
The figure of the dog itself seems quite fresh, with no significant retouches or losses, save for a group of scuffs along the thigh of the dog. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a somewhat opaque varnish which masks early restoration underneath, if there is any. A repaired tear in the canvas measure approx. seven inches is visible along the shoulder of the dog. Some retouches are visible under UV light along the lower right edge of the chair.

Catalogue Note
The Conde de Adanero was perhaps the most important collector of Old Master paintings in Spain during the nineteenth century.1 He was renown for his exquisite taste and his collection included works by Velázquez, El Greco and Zurbarán.
