Description

  • Pieter Casteels III
  • Still life of flowers in a gilt urn on a stone ledge
  • signed and dated lower right: P. Casteels F.1721
  • oil on canvas, in an English carved and gilt wood frame

Provenance

Sir John Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Gower (1694–1754);
Thence by descent to his son, Admiral The Hon. John Leveson-Gower (1740–92);
Thence by family descent until sold, London, 13 July 1988, lot 98, for £72,000.

Condition

The canvas has quite recently been cleaned, relined and restored, and is in excellent overall condition. The top 5 cm. of the canvas may once have been folded over as a previous tacking edge is faintly discernible. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals only the most minor spot retouchings. There is some light scuffing in the upper left hand corner. The varnish remains clear and even and the painting should not require any further attention. Offered with a later carved and swept English gilt wood frame in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

This flowerpiece was commissioned by Sir John Leveson-Gower, who may have come to know Casteels through his wife's brother, Evely Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston, who employed the artist's brother-in-law, Peter Tillemans, to paint his portrait shooting at Thorseby.
