Catalogue Note

Lots 518, 519 and 609 are studies for an edition of Aristophanes’ bawdy comic play, Lysistrata, published in 1934 by the Limited Editions Club with accompanying illustrations by Picasso. Set in Greece during the Peloponnesian War, the play tells the story of the strong minded Lysistrata, who persuades her fellow women to withhold sex from their husbands as an ingenious means of bringing the war to an end. After a lengthy period of forced abstinence, the men declare an end to the war and general rejoicing ensues as husbands and wives are reunited.
