Catalogue Note

A young McCartney designs a poster for his first band, The Quarry Men, for the gig at which George Harrison auditions to join he and Lennon

Paul McCaꦜrtney had joined꧒ John Lennon's skiffle and rock and roll cover band The Quarry Men in 1957. The group gigged sporadically throughout that year, slowly dropping skiffle from their set in favor of Buddy Holly and Everly Brothers tunes, but by early 1958 it was evident that to continue in this vein they would need better skills on lead guitar that McCartney was able to provide.

McCartney r꧂ecommende🌳d a young school friend, 15 year old George Harrison, and Harrison auditioned on 13 March, 1958. The present poster has a date of 14 March and while it carries no year, no record of Quarry Men concerts exists for any other March dates in 1958 or the following year.

Perhaps in anticipation of whatever fame McCar🎐tney felt might be in their future, he repeatedly practices his signature on the back o🌱f this poster sketch.

a highly evocative and personal relic from The Beatles early years
