Appreciating [the scroll] either in a Seated or Reclining Posture.
Zhongfang (Qian Fen), my elder, who is known for his high and refined thoughts and behavior, is someone I truly admire. He is also well known for his skill in painting, and his work is cherished and treasured. He has given me this long scroll. When I am free from work, I often allow myself to (view and) wander through it. This instantly absolves me from all vulgar sentiments. The effect is truly akin to an encounter with a new idea that refreshes [my mind].

Artist's inscription:
How distant is the isle in this lake? The setting sun creates half shadows in the forest.
By chance I come and sit by the water; It is not because I envy the fish's (joy and freedom).
