after a design by Pyotr Vyechegzhanin, the rim inscribed in Russian 'From the spark of 1905 flamed world revolution', the cavetto painted with a bright pink sun bursting with yellow flames, with overglaze blue hammer, cog and sickle dated 1920

very good condition, with a small area of rubbing to the paint of the sunset, visible in the printed catalogue illustration, and a very small area of loss to the black border at 9 o'clock.

Catalogue Note

Tamara Rust Milford (1913-2008) was a Russian émigré to Britain who became prominent in British Communist circles.  She married, firstly, William Rust (1903-1949) editor of London's daily Communist newspaper the Daily Worker, later the Morning Star.  Following his death, she married, in 1956, Wogan Philipps, 2nd Baron Milford (1902-1993), the only member of the British Communist Party ever to sit in the House of Lords.  They lived in Hampstead, where the 'Red Peer' and his wife entertained like-minded friends.
