Catalogue Note

This piece is notable for the naturalistic modelling of the rockwork. Two jade carvings fashioned in a similar style, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, are illustrated in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum. Jade, vol. 5, Tang, Song, Liao, Jin and Yuan Dynasties, Beijing, 2011, pls. 95 and 96, the first carved with a scholar, and the second with an immortal; and another also in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures in the Palace Museum. Jadeware (II), Hong Kong, 1995, pl. 99. This piece is a fragment of what was probably originally an oval-shaped reticulated plaque depicting a larger figure scene. See for example a Song dynasty plaque similarly depicting a court lady surrounded by elaborate rockery, sold in these rooms 4th April 2012, lot 3017.
