The canvas has not been lined. There is a faint horizontal stretcher mark in the centre of the composition and some areas of frame rubbing with related paint loss notably in the upper and lower edge, covered by the frame. The inner slip of the frame also appears to have darkened the upper edge, as visible from the catalogue illustration. Ultra-violet light reveals some scattered areas of strengthening, including in the commode's leg, in the figure's head and hair, and in the folding screen in the background. The signature sitting above the artist's appears to fluoresce under UV and could possibly have been added following re-framing. This work is overall in good condition and ready to hang. Presented in a decorative gilt frame.
