Catalogue Note
The collection includes letters by Frederick H. Quitman, J. R. Van Rensselaer, Th. de Zenz, Jacob Radcliffe, James Emmett, Ebenezer Foote, Thomas Cooper, James Cornwall, Joshua Ward, Peter B. Ten Brouh, Catharine Van R. Schuyler, Robert Tillotson, Mary Livingston, Philip Church, and others. The documents are receipts for duties paid on carriages of various types.
On 1 April 1801, Schuyler's sister-in-law Catharine Van Rensselaer writes, "Sister Church is still with us. She goes in less than a week, & will take charge of your Cheese. Mamma was afraid to trust them to Hamilton. The sloop he went down in took fire as it lay at anchor in Haverstraw Bay, they extinguished it, & reached N. Yorkไ at 1 O'clock next day — his passage was a short one of only 25 hours."
