Catalogue Note

In his lengthy letter, J. Maunsell Van Rensselaer, author of the Annals of the Van Rensselaers in the United States, vindicates her father's honor against charges of incompetence and maladministration during the American retreat from Ticonderoga in 1777. Van Rensselaer obtained firsthand accounts from his grand uncle Henry Van Rensselaer and other relatives serving in the action. Schuyler had sent 400 New York militia under Henry Van Rensselaer to Fort Anne to meet the troops retreating from Ticonderoga. As the Americans regrouped, they realized they now outnumbered the British and turned to attack. Additionally, Schuyler utilized delaying tactics which significantly weakened Burgoyne's army, and as Van Rensselaer states, also saved the garrison at Fort George. General Horatio Gates took full credit for Schuyler's maneuvers, subsequently causing the latter to be ousted from his command by Congress in August 1777.

Anne Grant's letter recollects her time spent with Eliza and her sisters when they were children, and mentions other close relatives. She also reports that she was presently reading the first volume of The Memoirs of Alexander Hamilton,ꦿ edited by John Church Hamilton (1834), which was sent to Mrs. Grant by Eliza.
