Catalogue Note
The print on the reverse depicts St. Luke holding his Gospel, with an ox (his symbol) behind. It was printed by Wilhelm Reich (sometimes Reichi), a little-known publisher of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century whose works are rare. Only one example is found in the whole British Museum collection, an Allegory of Salvation by the printmaker Franz Brun the Younger (1979,U.694), whose career flourished from 1589 to 1658. This provides an approximate date range for the present print, which bears the partial date '18'. The combination of these two elements suggest the print of St. Luke dates from 1618.
