Catalogue Note

Under the reign of Sultan Selim III (r.1789-1807),  several economic reforms which were necessary for the survival of the Ottoman Empire were initiated. Although the Nizam-I Djiedid, a new army created in 1793, did not survive Selim III, it was under his reign that economic reforms aiming at centralising the imperial budget were implemented and more regular relations with Europe were promoted with the appointment of permanent ambassadors in London (1793), Berlin, Vienna and Paris (1795).

Jean- François Duchateau lived in Istanbul between 1775 and 1796 and portrayed many diplomats of the Ottoman court. This portrait is a copy of one attributed to him and now in the Topkapi Saray Museum (Kangal 2000, N132, p.465 and N145, p.499). Similar portraits of three-quarter length, set in an oval and signed by Duchateau are in the Collection of the Royal Castle in Warsaw (Kangal 1999, p.246-7, inv.no.721 and 722).
