Description
- Textile - velvet and metal-thread
- 74 by 40cm; 75 by 43cm (framed)
the deep red voided velvet on a dark ivory silk ground, with vestiges of metal thread wrapping, dark olive green velvet highlights, featuring stylised palmettes with carnations and tulips, mounted and set in box frame with glass
Condition
Colour in reality not as dark as in the printed catalogue photograph, but lighter and more subtle cerise hue.
A full loom width (approx. 45cm.), set into wooden mounted frame, and glazed. With satin silk crimson backing (18th century), horizontal split across top exposing woven textile, the textile in generally faded condition, some oxidisation to green areas of pile creating a more delicate design, cerise pile in overall good condition with some losses down to foundation in extreme top-left corner. Some minor areas of cerise detailing within palmettes with slightly lower pile. The metal thread wrapping of the ivory coloured ground now mainly gone; the silk core with numerous areas of later consolidation stitching stabilising the foundation. Would benefit from re-mounting in the future, according to taste. Striking fragment of evocative repeat motif.
