Description

  • Textile - voided velvet and metal-thread
  • 111 by 62cm
of rectangular format, the cerise silk velvet voided on a dark ivory silk ground, centred with a large sun motif with tulip surround, enclosed within four large curved leaf motifs, with the same sun motif within the spandrels and stencil tulip lappets at both ends, within narrow borders, mounted within a detachable box frame

Condition

Colour in reality not as dark as in the printed catalogue photograph, but lighter and more subtle pale cerise hue. This loom width has been mounted onto a stretcher and set within a detachable box wood frame (without glass). The panel has been edged with cotton bias binding on all four edges, and there is evidence of the far outer cerise vertical edging of the velvet panel just underneath the bias binding. There is a horizontal line in the top section through the corner spandrels visible due to warped tension. It is not a cut and join. Top edge with some areas of lower cerise pile to the motifs, and some weaknesses to ground in top left and right corners as visible in photograph, overall good condition, particularly large format.

Catalogue Note

Surviving evidence suggests that cushion covers (yastik yüzü) were woven in pairs and more rarely in sets of four. They used a variety of designs which were adapted for repeat/mirror image yardage. It is not unusual to find the covers later re-used in other items, due to their size, and their designs influenced those of small embroideries and pile weavings produced in Anatolia and the Caucasus.

For a comparable yastik, with the same sun burst medallion and corner spandrels with a row of tulip motif filled lappets across the lower edge (without any horizontal border between the main field and the lappet border), see a Russian Orthodox cope made from two similar velvet yastik covers, Kremlin Armory Museum, Moscow (Inv. no. TK-2216), and other similar yastiks, with central medallions, with upper and lower lappets, and no borders (Atasoy 2001, pp.320-1).
