- Textile - embroidered silk
- 152 by 105cm
worked in silk embroidery and darning, on a natural linen ground, comprised of four vertically joined panels, worked with red undulating vines and polychrome stylised leafy palmettes between, each with blue dot motifs resembling seeds, with three sided border visible; reduced in size
Condition
Colours lighter in appearance in reality compared to the image in the printed catalogue.
This fragment with curved corners along one edge, has been cut horizontally across the top and there is approx. 7cm. turned under across this horizontal edge, and there is later linen backing which partially covers this turned under area. This fragment is comprised of four vertically joined panels, with the far-left join curving towards the right, in addition to the vertical join. There are some vertical consolidation stitches, stabilising the muslin ground where there are losses as visible in photograph, especially within lower section, where there is also a dark stain in lower-left corner. The embroidery is in generally very good condition and bright, with lovely combination of colours including lime-green and evergreen.

For embroidered textiles with comparable designs, of the red undulating vines and alternating flower heads and variation of the hyacinth flowers, see a very similar bohça panel, pre-1700 (106 by 98cm with the blue seed pods) (Taylor 1993, pp.118-9), and a similar complete hanging, seventeenth century, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv. no. 121-1899), (Wearden and Ellis, p.17, pl.10), and two similar quilt covers, seventeenth century, from the Sadberk Hanim Museum Collection (Bilgi and Zanbak 2012, pp.58-61, nos.1&2), for a similar cover, eighteenth century (Krody 2000, p.113, no.14).
