Description

- 287 by 176cm
comprised of five joined strips, with one strip in a predominantly cerise pink shade rather than red, with the `Queen pattern’ with a double eagle, peacock central strip of diamond and ‘v’-shaped design, the other panels with variation of the pattern, with the eagle and with an angular scroll support through the centre, each panel applied with narrow ribbon along the vertical joins
Condition
Colours a bit yellow in the image of the whole panel in the printed catalogue, and in reality the appearance is crisp and defined with attractive lighter colours and natural coloured ground.
This panel is not lined, 6cm turned under at one end. There has been some folding across the width of the panel. These folds are stitched in place on the reverse. There are some small surface stains and some discoloration in top-left corner where there is a small hole and there are some other small holes at the top of the fourth main vertical band from the left. This is a particularly striking and highly decorative panel, beautifully worked.

Catalogue Note
See the footnote to previous curtain, lot 154, for comparable designs to the cerise rather than madder coloured outer panel of this curtain, and for the `Queen pattern’ used as the double pattern to left and right of each individual panel. See further examples with variations in the design of the central support, which on three of the four panels making up the present curtain, show a slightly angular scroll pattern, rather than hexagonal variations, and partial scroll, ribbon like sections, for example an eighteenth century curtain, possibly Melos (Wace 1935, No.24, p.52, pl.XXXI).
