Description

  • tinned copper
of shallow circular form, with cusped rim on short foot, the interior decorated with a central blazon ringed by naskh calligraphy surrounded by dense arabesques, exterior with an Armenian inscription

Condition

The copper is rubbed throughout the surface, affecting especially the areas of the rim and the cavetto, slight rubbing of the central blaze and inscription, a break on the rim at approximately 6 o'clock, minor dents consistent with its age, as viewed.

‘One of [the objects] made for al-Sayfi, the secretary (pen-box holder dawadar) of Qansuh, al-Sayfi Yashbak the Amir of arms (silah) and the grand Amir, the dawadar’

Armenian inscription to outer side:
MALI BABAI /ՄԱԼԻ ԲԱԲԱՅ/ (possibly an ownership name)

Although al-Sayfi Yashbak is unidentifiable, there exists a certain Yashbak min al-Mahdi who held the titles Dawadar Kabir and Amir Silah under Sayf al-Din Qaytbay (1468-96 AD) and died during the last ten days of Ramadan 1480 AD) (L. A. Mayer, Saracenic Heraldry, 1999, pp.251-3).
