Catalogue Note
The carved monument which served as inspiration for this tile is known as the İvriz monument, today situated in the Konya Province of Turkey. Standing over four metres tall and dated to the eighth century, the impressive relief depicts Warpalawas, King of Tuwana, paying tribute to the storm God Tarhunza, characteristically holding a long branch of wheat in one hand and bunches of grapes in the other, symbols of fertility. It is possible that the artist of the present tile saw the relief, including the Luwian inscriptions, which are hard to decipher, resulting in a slight alteration of each hieroglyph.
