Ottoman Turkish manuscript on paper, tall berat with 8 lines to the page, written in diwani script in black and red alternating ink, surmounted by a tughra in black ink, smaller berat with 19 lines to the page, written in diwani script in black and red alternating ink, surmounted by a tughra in black ink

Condition

In fair condition, creasing, water and various stains, minor tears and small holes, as viewed.

Catalogue Note

The berat on the left bears the tughra of Sultan 'Abdülaziz (r.1861-76 AD) and concerns a dispute over the rank and appropriate pay for apprentice bakers at the soup kitchen (imaret) of Mihrishah Valide Sultan in Bostan Iskelesi in Eyüp. It is dated 1285 AH/1868 AD and bears at the bottom a seal impression indicating that it was a berat of the Treasury of Imperial Waqf. The berat on the right bears the tughra of Sultan Selim III (r.1789-1807 AD) and concerns the appointment of Bahshi Halife as successor to Bahshayish Baba Zaviye in Eskishehir following the death of the previous incumbent, dated 1219 AH/1804 AD.
