Catalogue Note

This illustration is from an extensive Ragamala series formerly attributed to the Deccan but now believed to be early seventeenth-century popular Mughal. The series has been the subject of two scholarly studies, one by Joachim Bautze (1999) and one by Ludwig Habighorst (2006). see also Glynn, Skelton and Dallapiccola 2011, nos. 14-15. An illustration from the series is in the Cleveland Museum of Art (2001.112), while others have been sold at Bonhams, New York, 14 September 2015, lots 96-97, and 17 March 2014, lot 104; Christie's New York, 31 March 2005, lot 226 and Christie's London, 26 May 2016, lot 27.
