Catalogue Note

This Mughal miniature dates from around 1600, but at some later stage, probably in the nineteenth century, the faces of all the figures have been repainted and the main seated figure of the ruler has altered to represent Jahangir. The composition is typical of illustrations from historical manuscripts of the period. Examples of related compositions can be found in several such manuscripts, including the Victoria and Albert Museum copy of the imperial Akbarnama (e.g. IS.2:7-1896; IS.2:50-1896; IS.2:27-1896).
