Catalogue Note

The subject of a group of men, often sufis, gathering on a hillside while brewing a cauldron of liquor, was a popular one in Persia and India from the sixteenth century onwards. Many examples exist, with varying compositions. Many showing the characters in a more obvious state of inebriation or religious ecstasy. For a summary see Fraser 2015.
