Catalogue Note

This scene of a princess and her companions enjoying fireworks on a terrace at night may represent the festival of Diwali, the annual Hindu festival of light, or the Muslim festival of Shab-Bara'at (Ar. Layla al-Bar'at), the eve of the middle night of the month of Sha'ban, one of the Layali al-Wuqud (Nights of Light or Nights of Radiance), on which fireworks and illuminations are lit, people seek forgiveness and their future fortunes are determined. A related eighteenth-century Mughal scene is on the British Library (India Office Collections, Johnson Album 20, no.2, see Falk and Archer 1981, no.171).
