- ink on paper - bound manuscript
Arabic manuscript on paper, 337 leaves plus 2 flyleaves, 11 lines to the page written in naskh script in black ink, verses separated by gold and polychrome roundels, surah headings within cartouches in red thuluth against a gold background decorated with floral scrolls, ruled in orange, green and gold, ’hasra and khamsa verse markers in red and blue in the margins, opening illuminated double shamsa, followed by a further double page of illumination with text in white muhaqqaq against a gold ground within lobed cartouches decorated with gold and polychrome flower scrolls and chinoiserie cloud bands, first double page of surah al-baqarah (II) similarly illuminated with text in clouds reserved against gold floral ground, the end of the manuscript with prayers in naskh and nasta'liq scripts, with spurius date 921 AH/1515-16 AD, in gold lacquer floral and calligraphic binding with gilt filigree-work medallions on the doublures
Condition
In good condition, the margins overall clean with minor restorations mainly affecting the borders, various stains throughout, the illuminated pages with some losses to the colour and gold and minor restoration but maintaining a crisp calligraphy, owner's notes at the end, minor losses to the gilded filigree-work on the doublures, as viewed.
