Probably by inheritance to her son (according to a label on the reverse).

Literature

F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma del '700, Rome 1986, p. 233, cat. no. 33, reproduced (as Panini);
D.R. Marshall, 'Ruin Painting in 1700: Alberto Carlieri, pupil of Andrea Pozzo', in Artibus et Historiae, no. 50, Vienna and Krakw 2004, p. 51, fig. 98a (as Menia ?).

Condition

The canvas is relined and the painting is relatively clean and slightly discoloured by the varnish. The craquelure in the lower centre of the painting is stable and there is visible retouching in this area as well as in the lower right side of the painting the three figures in the foreground. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals some further retouchings to the lower right side of the painting and minor retouching to the upper right side in the sky. Overall, the painting is in good and stable condition. Offered in a gilded frame in very good condition.

Catalogue Note

When this painting was first published, Arisi noted that it was formerly fully signed, but that this signature was removed during cleaning, before 1986. We are grateful to Professor David R. Marshall for suggesting an attribution to Raffaele Rinaldi, called Il Menia, on the basis of photographs.1
