Description
- A five-piece jewelled silver-gilt, lapis lazuli and ivory desk set, Franz Jauner, Vienna, 1850

- case: 36cm., 18 1/8 in. wide
in style Troubadour, comprising an inkstand, of scalloped form, with two receptacles, one supported by a dragon, the other by chained enemies, centred by a knight offering a jewelled crown to his betrothed, on a chequered lapis ground, the rim with the accolé arms of Clam-Gallas and von Dietrichstein below a count’s coronet, and the coat of arms of Franz Josef I, on four dragon supports, 31cm., 12 ¼ in. wide, a paper knife with ivory handle, the finial carved as newly-weds wrapped in the wings of an angel holding a wreath above their heads, applied with the same coats of arms, set with lapis cabochon, 25cm., 9 7/8 in. long, a candlestick and its snuffer, set with lapis cabochons, the stem as a putto holding the accolé coats of arms, the handle as an angel, 14.5cm., 5 ½ in. high, and a bell, the stem in the form of a king and queen with love birds above, on a lapis cabochon, the bell applied with accolé arms below a coronet, 16cm., 6 ¼ in. high, each piece signed ‘Franz Jauner Wien 1850’, in a leather case with beige velvet and silk lining
Provenance
The desk set was presented by Franz Josef I (reigned as Emperor of Austria 1848-1916) to Count Eduard Clam-Gallas (1805-1891), an Austrian cavalry general, on the occasion of his marriage in 1850 to Clothilde (1828-1899), daughter and heiress of Prince Joseph-Franz von Dietrichstein.
Condition
Some slight losses to gilding at highlights but overall very good condition. Ivory paper knife with a few minute chips to edge. Inkstand has a hidden drawer with blue enamel inkwell.
