Description

  • 25.6cm., 10 1/8 in. high, 36cm., 14 1/8 in. diam.
designed by Alexandre-Paul Avisse (active 1848-1884), probably decorated by J.C.G Derichsweiler (1855-84), set with a pâte-sur-pâte portrait medallion of Cybele en profil, reserved within a printed design of floral garlands and intricate scrollwork cartouches, the sides set with five gilt medallions enclosing etched emblems of horticulture, inscribed to the front 'EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE/ PARIS-1878', the base also inscribed with '1878', 'Sèvres', 'Paris', 'Exposition', stencilled green lozenge 'S.79.' mark, 'RF DECORE A SEVRES 79' mark in iron-red, indistinct incised potters mark EL 78 7 (?), indistinct painter's mark in green, probably for Derichsweiler (1855-84)

Condition

There is a small shallow chip ,approx. 0.5cm.square, to the underside rim at the top of the pedestal which supports the tazza. Otherwise in overall good condition with very minor wear.

Catalogue Note

This type of 'coupe' was made in a series presented at the 1878 Exposition Universelle as an award in the agricultural section. The portrait of Cybele as the goddess of nature and fertility is most appropriate for its purpose. A tazza of this type was sold at Sotheby's, The Great Exhibition Sale, 31st October 2006, lot 587.
