Catalogue Note
This light celadon jade disc, with chicken-bone white calcification and suffused with brown, exhibits a strong sense of glassy texture. It is meticulously carved on both sides, and the entire piece is covered with interlocking cloud patterns and reveals fine detail throughout. Compare a similar Warring States huan carved with interlocking cloud patterns in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Art in Quest of Heaven and Truth: Chinese Jades through the Ages, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2011, p. 101, pl. 5-6-17. The present piece is interesting as it retains some markings from the original linen fabric that was possibly enveloping this disc when placed in the burial pit.
