- gilt-bronze
the bodhisattva depicted seated in lalitasana with his left hand raised and his right hand resting above the knee, all supported on a lappet pedestal raised on a stepped base
Condition
There are minor bruises and chips to the edges of the figure, including the tip of the stem in her hand. Minor cracks to interior of the base. Gilding rubbed on figure and base. The base would originally have fitted into something, so does not stand perfectly.

Catalogue Note
A pair of figures belonging to the same group, one cast in a closely related pose and the other in mirror-image, was sold at Christie's London, 31st October 1972, lot 18. Similar small figures seated on a stepped pedestal surmounted by a lotus flower include a figure of a bodhisattva, illustrated in Matsubara Saburo, Chinese Buddhist Sculpture, Tokyo, 1966, pl. 267d; a slightly larger figure of Avalokitesvara, sold in our New York rooms, 20th March 2007, lot 737; and another, but retaining the original pierced rectangular base and elaborate mandorla, from the Mayer collection, included in the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition The Arts of the Tang Dynasty, London, 1955, cat. no. 359, sold at Christie's London, 24th/25th June 1974, lot 131.
