cast seated in dhyanasana with the right hand in bhumisparsa and left in dhyanamudra, all supported on a lotus base and a hexagonal pedestal with dedicatory inscriptions

good condition, with just minor bruises, rubbing to gilding and loss to detail

Related miniature gilt-bronze figures of Buddha also dated to the 29th year of Hongwu (corresponding to 1396), include one in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, accession no. EA1999.40; another published in Gems of Cultural Relics. Buddhist Statues I, Beijing, 2001, pl. 34; one sold at Christie's New York, 18th/19th September 2014, lot 1023; and a fourth, bearing a lengthy dedicatory inscription referring to the figure as one of a group of 5048 made for worship by future devotees, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 27th November 2007, lot 1806.
