Condition
The illustration of the catalogue is accurate.
There are the inevitable dents, marks and scratches due to age and use. There are some old traces of woodworms.
The gilding is rubbed and tarnished. There are numerous chips and surface scratches to the gilding revealing the red bowl, the white gesso and the wood underneath.
Each chair has the stencil oval mark under the seatrail "PENON FRERES/TAPISSERIE EBENISTERIE/Faubourg St. Honoré,5./PARIS".
The constructions are firm. The red velvet is in good overall condition.
Chair 1 (A): this chair is 18th century (the one at the back of the catalogue illustration). The right front foot has been broken and restored. Some wooden pegs have been changed. A piece of wood has been added to the end of each front foot.
Chair 2 (B), 3 (C) and 4 (D): as stated in the catalogue these chairs are not 18th century but later. A piece of wood has been added to the end of each front foot.
Very elegant suite of chairs.
