Catalogue Note

Aubert Henri Joseph Parent (1753-1835) was a French artist known for his limewood panel carvings. His work captured the attention of Louis XVI who used a limewood carving of flowers along with symbols of war and piece for his dining room in Versailles. The patronage of Louis XVI, however, forced Parent to flee to Switzerland during the Revolution but he eventually returned to France where he taught architecture for the remainder of his life. An example of Parent's floral work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1971.206.39).
