Catalogue Note

With their bombé shapes, short yet graceful legs, and rich parquetry inlay, these commodes are emblematic products of Neapolitan cabinetmaking in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. While basically Rococo in their shape and form, the inlaid decoration of these works are distinctly Neoclassical. The interlaced star design incorporated into the front, sides and top of the commodes is another popular feature and can be found on other commodes of the same origin and age, such as the ones sold Sotheby's New York, April 1, 2010, lot 104, and October 3, 2008, lot 213. For a comparable pair of commodes with similar but less intricate inlay and undecorated tops, see Sotheby's New York, October 1, 2010, lot 84 ($62,500).
