Catalogue Note
Laminate was used until the 1960s as a surface to reproduce, by imitation, something that already exists in nature (wood, marble, etc). Ettore Sottass’ great insight was to realise that laminate could have its own independent and emotional range that could help give identity to the surface of an object, thereby changing our perception of it. Sottsass brought a new way of conceiving the laminate. 'Le Società del Pianeta‘, a bed designed for Design Gallery Milano, and exhibited in 1992 at the Ruins exhibition, presents perfectly the designer’s relationship with this material. The object was transformed into a message of provocation for the traditional culture of design. More a sculpture than a piece of furniture, at the same time the combination of patterns and colours makes it a playful object.
