Catalogue Note

In the unfortunate absence of de la Mésangère's mounting or Richard de Lédans's handwritten inscriptions glued to the reverse, it is impossible to identify today the elegant young lady that Carmontelle has here portrayed by.
Seated before an avenue of trees reminiscent of the gardens at Saint-Cloud, the property of the Orléans family, and tightly grasping a violin between her knees like a bass viol, our young sitter seems to have paused in her music-making just long enough so that Carmontelle could produce this snapshot of a charming moment.
