The anti-Jacobin was a unique project started by George Canning and William Gifford to counter-act revolutionary opinions and to commend the policies of the government. Other contributors included the amiable antiquary George Ellis and the country gentleman John Hookham Frere. It ran for only a year, from 20th November 1797 to 9th July 9 1798. "It owed much of its fame to verses written by Canning in whole or part, some of them parodies of poets who supported the opposition, such as "The Friend of Humanity and the Knife-Grinder", mocking Southey and the idealization of the poor..."
