Catalogue Note
Sydney Waterlow, a brilliant Cambridge graduate and contemporary there of Strachey, Woolf, Keynes and others who were later part of the Bloomsbury Group, became an excellent walking companion of James's in his later years at Rye. Waterlow was in the Foreign Office and was then married to Alice Pollock, daughter of the eminent jurist whom James had known since childhood. See Edel, The Master 1901-1916, p.389)
