Catalogue Note

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. The Works were first published in four volumes in 1735, with an additional two volumes being added three years later (although volume two, "containing the author's poetical works", was also issued separately in 1737).

As Teerink notes, the 1735 editions were not yet exhausted when the new volumes appeared in 1738, resulting in new buyers receiving mixed sets until those copies ran out. The present copies were likely purchased around this 🌊time since they comprise a mixture of the 1735 edition (volume one), the 1737 edition of volume two, and seemingly copies of the third and fourth volume made up with a combination of sheets and title pages from both editions.
