Catalogue Note

Michele della Valle does not often talk about himself, but rather lets his jewels speak for him and express his attention to details, his fascination for beauty and his love of colours and shapes.

Nature has always been a major source of inspiration for jewellery. The First Empire in France looked back to Antiquity and Nature to find motifs for jewels. The Art Nouveau trend at the end of the 19th century explored the lines of foliate designs, while the Garland Style used flowers and scrolls, and the 1950s and 1960s explored t💫he use of stones such as coral, turquoise and amethyst  within naturalistic designs.

One of the 20th and 21st centuries most original and creative jewellery designers, Michele della Valle also turns to nature for inspiration. The Geneva-based Italian, one of the 20th and 21st centuries most fanciful and original jewellery designers, looks back to his childhood and converts stories, daydreams an𒊎d fairy tales into bold, imaginative jewellery creations.

His love and fascination for colours reflect in his jewels and this is well expressed by Amber Michelle in the book Michele della Valle. Jewels and Myths:

“Perhaps the most important part of della Valle’s design vocabulary – and where his creative genius is immediately recognisable – is his use of colour. Like music, Michele della Valle jewellery bursts with bold, bodacious tones of colouration. His pieces celebrate the wonder of colour; gemstones are juxtaposed against each other in a mosaicked kaleidoscope of dazzling brilliance, dancing with a joie de vivre that summons you closer and draws you into their world of lore. Colour is also used to recreate the subtle nuances of splendour found in nature – the gentl⭕e curve of a flower petal, the inner heart of the blossom – each detail is fully defined by a range of hues.🍸 Every floral design is intricately crafted to give sparkling life to opulent flora that beckon with their mystical messages.

His animals – often enlivened by movement – reflect the inner spirit of each creature through the many shades of gems, giving each one an incandescence that glows from the heart of the jewel. Th𝕴e delicate wing of a butterfly, the exotic shape of a saltwater fish and the sinewy snake all come alive from the play of light and colour brought forward by the gems. When worn, each della Valle piece becomes even more animated as it wraps the curves of the body and sways with the movement of the person adorned with the jewel, celebrating the beauty of both the gems and the woman fortunate enough to step into the extravagant world imagined by Michele della Valle.”
