Designed as a seal, the body of an Australis shell, balancing polished sapphire and ruby bead balls on its nose, on an iron pyrite rock, to a petrified wood base, signed Grima, maker's mark, British hallmarks for London, 1972, original wooden crate marked Andrew Grima London twice.

Grima Retrospective, Goldsmiths' Hall, Fosters Lane, London, May 1991, where this piece was exhibited, item 277, page 74 in the catalogue.
Condition
British hallmarks for London, 18 carat gold, date letter R for 1972. Signed Grima and maker's mark AG Ltd to side of cage. Petrified wood mottled grey and white, with patches of red. With typical structure visible to the naked eye. Some cracks reaching the exterior. Iron pyrite rock brown with pale encrustation, cracks to surfaces and throughout stone. Shell with base broken and restuck, some glue residue visible, some associated loss of pattern surface. Sapphire mid blue, rubies mid purplish red, typical inclusions visible to the naked eye, some are surface reaching, some light surface scratches, minor chips. Cage intact, some sections slightly bent. Iro pyrite rock loose from base, Ruby and sapphire beads with some movement. Scratches to all surfaces consistent with age and wear. Measuring approximately 155 x 115 x 175mm. Overall condition good. Box stamped Grima.
