Original canvas partly exposed on lower edge. The paint surface is dirty and would benefit from cleaning but the canvas may need to be re-lined and re-stretched in order to do this. Two clumsy patches on the reverse probably circa 1900 which would need to be re-worked. Patches relate to old damage to the canvas although this is not entirely evident from inspecting the painting from the front.

Hutchisson arrived in Murshidabad in 1835-36 and was the leading European painter in Bengal after George Chinnery, who had left for China in 1825. His work was popular with the local Indian rulers and he made enough money from portrait commissions in Calcutta and Murshidabad to buy two Indigo plantations and live the life of a country squire in colonial India.
