Condition

Overall in very good condition. This lamp was originally owned by Wallace H. Rowe, the first president of the Pittsburgh Steel Company, who kept it at his summer residence in Cobourg, Ontario. It has been in the possession of the same family since the 1950s. The shade with approximately 24 cracks to the glass tiles dispersed throughout, all stable, which is a relatively low number in proportion to the vast number of glass tiles which were required to execute this elaborate shade design. The shade is composed of vigorously mottled favrile glass tiles with rich earth tones, luscious jewel tones, and subtle pastel accents. The overall composition shows a highly artistic color gradient around the circumference of the shade, with one side displaying blossoms of deep crimson that are complemented by more peach and coral blossoms on the other side (visible in the overhead shade detail in the catalogue.) The telescopic base presents with a rich green patina with some light surface scratches, gentle rubbing, and light surface soiling to the recessed contours of the design consistent with age and very gentle handling. The base cushion with an isolated area of loss to the patina, not visually detractive. All of the sockets and paddle switches appear to be replacements from the period. With a period finial. An exceptional “Peony” lamp with diverse, rich coloration and provenance dating back to the period.
