Description

  • George Nakashima
  • "Slab" Coffee Table
  • signed with client's name and date
  • American black walnut and East Indian rosewood

Provenance

Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner, 1978

Condition

Overall in good original condition, with the exception of minor areas of re-gluing to a series of age separation cracks to the burl/knot to the rear of the top - this is more evident when this area is viewed from the underside where small/minor areas of later applied glue are visible. The rear plank support also appears to have been removed to allow access to these areas and then re-screwed and re-glued into place. Despite these issues in our opinion this do not adversely affect the overall attractive appearance of the table, and the age separation cracks and frame all remain firm and stable. The top is executed in a beautifully figured walnut that is made more dynamic by a natural fissure stabilized with a signature rosewood butterfly. With a few gentle surface scratches to the top surface of the table and a few minor edge losses to the lower edge of the table along the thin portion of the board which are not visible once the table is righted. The table presents with nice proportion and scale when viewed in person.
