Condition

Overall good condition consistent with age and use. The silver leaf is beautifully rendered with geometric patterns and vegetal motifs on both panels, with scattered rubbing, craquelure, nicks, scuffs, scratches, some localized staining and some discoloration throughout. Some wear to the silvering revealing the black lacquer, as visible in the catalogue illustration. A few minor chips to the bottom of the panels, revealing the white gesso in some areas, with further scattered chips and losses to the plaster throughout. A few areas have been professionally and sensitively retouched in a silver finish, and a few areas of gesso are slightly loose. A scuff to one panel on the inside running at a diagonal which measures approximately 11in. The gilt bronze handles with minor oxidation and are slightly loose. The upholstery has been replaced and present with minor signs of wear and gentle use. Some scattered staining to the mattress which may be removed with a professional cleaning. A spectacular work by Rateau with excellent provenance. For more detailed images of this lot, please contact the department.
