Catalogue Note

Detailed in the Buddhist Pali canon, the Avadana legends chronicle the past lives of Buddhist figures and link past karmic events to future life stories. These canonized legends were summarized in the eleventh century in a treatise known as Leaves of the Heaven Tree, by the Kashmiri poet Kshemendra.

Another thangka from this set,♛ detai🐲ling a further Avadana legend, was sold at Sotheby's New York, 24 March 2011, lot 83.
